I am Dorian Hicks, I am a partner at Mazars leading the general insurance actuarial team and I feel honoured to be nominated for the title of GI Actuary of the year.
During my twenty years of being an actuary one conversation, from a few years ago, serves to illustrate how I like to work. I was trying to convince the client that perhaps they needed to be a bit more pragmatic and that their aspirations meant they were spending too much money on consultancy support i.e. mine and my team’s time. While seeing my point the client did tell me I would never make partner with that attitude. Fortunately for me, that turned out not to be true.
I raise this story for two reasons. Firstly, don’t get lost in the detail and try to make sure you can answer questions that really matter to your business. Secondly, there are different ways to succeed and success means different things to different people. I have always tried to do what I think is the right thing even if this means taking a path which is harder, at least in the short term.
Outside of work I share my life and home with my wife and three lovely children. My five-year-old apparently wants to be a dancer when she is older so most nights, I get a lot of joy from dancing with her, which she also tells me makes her happy.
I am striving to live a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle and to convince others to do so too. With that in mind, my top tips would be switch to a genuine green energy provider, eat less meat, make sure your next car is an electric one and try to fly less. I have set myself the target of flying no more than once per year, for all the downsides of Covid19 it has at least made that target far easier to achieve.
