Alice Piper

I became a Fellow of the IFoA in 2007 and am currently the Life Chief Actuary at NFU Mutual.
NFU Mutual is a composite insurer and is better known for its general insurance products. We have a history of strong farming links and, consequently, many of our Life business customers are existing general insurance customers from the farming / rural community.
This is my first role with a Mutual and a composite. It is also my first role with a firm which distributes its business through its own network of agents. All of this has provided excellent opportunity to expand my knowledge and widen my experience.
My role is a second line role and my responsibilities include the regulatory duties of the Actuarial Function (under
Solvency II) as well as independent validation of the internal model.
The Actuarial Function is a joint GI and Life team, which means everyone in the team (including myself) gets opportunities for exposure to both disciplines.
I have in the past worked for (proprietary) Life Offices and Pensions Consultancies and spent a few years working in management consulting.
I grew up in Denmark (north of Copenhagen) before moving to the UK at age 17. My husband and I are hobby smallholders growing a selection of fruit and veg as well as keeping numerous animals (all pets!) and honey bees – it is a rule in our house that every meal must include our own produce!
In a normal year I would now be looking forward to my next skiing holiday in Canada. However, this winter we will be spending our holidays at home. I bought a spinning bike in February and have been using it at least 3 times a week. It has been helping me stay fit while working at home and I am proud to say I became a member of the Peloton Century Club a few months ago.
