I am a Partner at XPS with over 20 years’ experience of advising pension scheme trustees and sponsors. I was a Scheme Actuary for several years, but over the last 10 years have moved to specialising in investment consulting.
I am proud to say that I started off as an XPS graduate – perhaps less proud that this was in the late 1990s! I thoroughly enjoy my job and this is due, in part, to the wide range of opportunities that the actuarial profession and XPS have offered. For example: I’ve been able to undertake a secondment to an asset management firm; been a regular speaker at industry seminars; and had the pleasure of working with peers at other firms on various industry committees. I even had a stint as head of a contracting-out research team when GMP equalisation was mercifully just a theoretical concept that we talked about rather than one we had to solve!
Nowadays I spend most of my time talking to trustees and sponsors about their scheme’s investment, risk and funding issues. I am particularly interested in helping clients focus their limited time and resources on the areas that really matter to them and their members. As part of this, I like to see clients implement asset strategies that are more reliable – solutions where investment return generation is more contractual or mechanical in nature and not reliant on complex fund manager decisions.
Within the wider industry, I am on the investment committees for both the ACA and the SPP, a mentor on the Actuarial Mentoring Programme and a former marker for the actuarial examinations. Outside of work, before Covid-19 I used to enjoy travelling to hot climates and watching cricket (ideally at the same time!).
The highlights of my career all revolve around happy clients (which ultimately of course results in happy members) and I would like to leave the last words of this bio to one of my long established clients:
“Adam has worked as our investment adviser since 2009 and during this time we have made some very proactive and sensible decisions which have benefitted us enormously. Adam and the team are obviously all very talented and professional in everything they do, but the difference is that they genuinely seem to care about the well being of our scheme.”
